How the Journey Started
In 1975, a small but passionate group of Springfield volunteers refused to stay silent. At a time when rape victims were shamed, blamed, and left without support, they founded RICS — the Rape Information and Counseling Service — to fight for survivors and challenge the laws that protected perpetrators. What began as a grassroots crisis hotline grew into Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault, now serving eleven counties across Central Illinois. Fifty years later, our founding promise still drives everything we do: confidential support, fierce advocacy, trauma counseling, and prevention education — so that every survivor knows they are not alone.
