Why Teal?

A whole town, the color of hope

Teal is the signature color of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Throughout April, you'll see teal ribbons decorating the downtown areas of Springfield, Jacksonville, and Taylorville — a visible, public stand that survivors are seen, believed, and supported.

When a storefront ties on a ribbon, a school wears teal, or a squad car flies a teal banner, it tells every survivor in our community: you are not alone, and this town has your back.

The Story of Denim Day

Wearing Jeans with Purpose

In the early 1990s, an Italian court overturned a rape conviction because the survivor wore tight jeans — ruling she must have helped remove them, and therefore consented. The next day, the women of the Italian Parliament wore jeans in protest.

That act sparked Denim Day, established in Los Angeles in 1999 and now recognized every year on the last Wednesday of April. Wearing denim is a visible protest against the myths and victim-blaming that surround sexual violence.
